Avli has a few outlets sprinkled across the city, but the Lakeshore East location is the golden child. It's sleek and modern (glass-enclosed wine room, glass-and-metal staircase) with an added feel of the Greek islands (white walls enhanced with nautical-minded rope). The menu spans the bulk of the classics including spreads, appetizers, salads and mains. Begin with a platter of spreads (Why pick just one? Order all four with a sampler), then go for a satisfying main dish, like the garides tiganites—sautéed marinated shrimp with sweet potato mousse—or a traditional moussaka. Dessert extends beyond the ubiquitous baklava and includes standouts like house-made Chios masthia ice cream with Greek sour cherry preserves and roasted pistachios.
