The New York Palace Hotel provides baroque splendour in spades and its New York Café is the most photographed dining space in Budapest. However, above it, on a mezzanine level, hides this lesser-known jewel, where an enthusiastic team deliver refined dishes which take inspiration from the former Austro-Hungarian empire. Rich, hearty flavours are balanced by occasional international notes, which adds a welcome freshness to proceedings. The duck confit is not to be missed and it’s always worth considering the set menus. If you’re lucky, there may even be a string quartet playing.
